FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO CONTINUE GIRLS’ EDUCATION

Sahiyar (Stree Sangathan) is active for women's rights since last 38 years. The organisation was started by a group of students from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 1984. Sahiyar aims to help build a society in which women have equal status and recognition as human beings. We have been working for women’s rights in and around Vadodara since then.

We undertake awareness programs & campaigns to change the structures and value systems of society in the long run while also undertaking activities to provide support to women and girls for their immediate needs.

We are conducting a major awareness programme for adolescent Girls. Girls face various problems during this transitional age because of lack of knowledge about the physical and emotional changes occurring in their bodies. The social and familial restrictions and lack of space to talk about their dilemmas increase their problems in this crucial period to build their career for their future development. We organise group discussions and individual counseling with girls in their schools and for dropout girls in the community to address these issues. During these sessions, we came across many girls who want to study but are likely to drop out because their parents do not have enough resources to pay their fees and other expenses. With privatisation of education and increasing cost of books stationery etc., it is very difficult for these poor and lower middle class families to supports their daughters to continue studies.

20 years ago we started a special support program for such girls. We convinced their parents to allow their daughters to continue their studies, and assured them that financial support would be mobilised by Sahiyar.

We support the cause of continuing education irrespective of the girls' academic results. Some girls also opt for professional studies. Some are working as nurse and police constable. We try to encourage them and broaden the choice of their careers.

We appeal our well-wishers to financially support one or more girls fully or partially to continue their studies. Since 2003-2004 more than 50 persons have supported more than 400 girls (fully or partially) to continue their studies. Sahiyar as an organisation is constantly monitoring the studies of the girls supported by our well wishers. We also provide them a space to share and learn from each other and also from the experienced resource persons.

We regularly conduct discussions/workshops for them to make them more confident, get some other vocational skills and become aware about their rights and responsibilities so that they can realise their potential and can be self-sufficient in future. Work with adolescent girls

Girls face various problems during this transitional period because of lack of knowledge about the physical and emotional changes occurring in their bodies and mind. The social and familial restrictions on girls and lack of space to talk about their dilemmas increase their problems. This is also a crucial period to build their career for their future development.

  • We organize group discussions and individual counselling with girls in their schools and with dropout girls in the community to address their issues.

  • Short term courses on Computer, Mehndi are offered so as to help girls develop skills that can be helpful to them in the long run.

  • We act as a link between Girls who might discontinue their education due to economic reasons and the well wishers who wish to provide scholarship to girls to continue their education.
